Sculpting Melissa - The first stages !

Welcome to sculpting "101"

This should help to clarify some of the
"Mysteries of Sculpting!"

Have fun!

Start with a small ball
of polymer clay.
Stick a pipe
cleaner in it.
Here I have used
Sculpey III

Add a neck around
the bottom.
Don't worry about the length of the neck
right now.
Long is good.

Press your finger in
the middle of the clay
for forehead.  Use the
end of a paintbrush
to make 2 indents for
eye sockets.

Side view of what
we have just done.
The forehead is too
 low at this point and
eyes are too high but
we can fix that.

Add a tiny ball of
clay for nose, or pull
a bit on the bridge
that was made
by the indents.

Cut a light line under
the bottom of nose.
This will be the
mouth.  How quickly
the face changes.

Here, cheeks are smoothed, tiny holes for nostrils are added. Forehead is built up

See the difference in
the forehead profile.
The nose is shaped a bit more too.

Add a tiny ball of
clay to each eye
socket. Smooth out.
Add tiny balls of
clay to each side
of nose.

Cut tiny line across the
center of each eye.
Define nostrils.
Open mouth a bit.
You can see her
waking up!

Gently open the eyes.
Smooth the lower
lids into the cheeks.
Upper lips have
started to be
defined.

Here the eyes have been softened, the
cheeks smoothed
a bit.  The face
has been
straightened out.

Constantly check
the evenness of the
sculpture by looking
at it from all angles.
This one needs
some work.

The dolls eyelids are
being further defined
Her brow bones are
also being worked on.

Look how much more
human her profile is.
Her nose is coming
along nicely.

Here the lids have
been blended in.
A bit of clay has
added to her chin
to round out her
profile.

A quick check shows
her brow line
to be uneven.
a tiny coil of clay
will fix that.

Now look at the profile.
Chin is more prominent
Brow line is better.

Add a small roll of
clay to the
upper lip area.

Smooth out the clay
She should now
have a nice
over bite.  We
will fix that next.
